Active Living: Fitness for Elementary Schools is introduces elementary teachers (physical education specialists and "generalist" teachers alike) to a unique and creative way of helping their students learn about the benefits of healthy active living. Teachers will learn how to teach the basics of personal fitness, and thereby foster personal confidence and a strong sense of body awareness among their students. This teacher resource is recommended reading for teachers from Kindergarten through Grade 9 who are looking for new ways to teach the principles of healthy active living, engage their students, and keep them active for life. COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATIONAL LEARNING KIT The learning kit includes the teacher resource book and 40 heavy-duty, laminated charts, plus the accompanying free teacher support on-line (differentiated instruction ideas, video representations, classroom handouts). Having mastered the safety tips and instructional guidelines in resource book, teachers can then use the additional resources in the classroom, gym or hallway to educate their students about healthy living and the principles of physical fitness while at the same time customizing cardiorespiratory, speed, agility, balance, and resistance routines to suit their students' current fitness level. The full learning kit will make it easy for elementary school teachers not only to teach functional fitness theory and the importance of healthy active living to their students, but to deliver Daily Physical Activity (DPA) and Fitness Blasts that are safe, fun, and personalized to meet the needs of all students. Building upon the Long Term Athlete/Participant Development (LTA/PD) program developed by Canadian Sport for Life, this new physical literacy program:
Board-wide Purchases: School boards making bulk purchases of this Learning Kit will be eligible for a board-wide teacher in-service to ensure successful implementation of a physical literacy program in schools across their districts. Examination copies are not available for the full Learning Kit. Click here to watch a CBC news story about physical education classes being taught in Atlantic Canada.
