What some of the reviewers have said ...
Consultant Reviews
- I think your team has done a lot of hard work to make a textbook that is useful for teachers and students to use in grade 9 and 10 HPE. Bravo for an excellent job. I would certainly recommend purchasing it.
Sandy Haliburton, Consultant, York Region District School Board
- This will give more meaning in taking the course(s) in the first place not just for fun, but to get something out of it for later in life!
Ron Lopez, Consultant, District School Board of Niagara
- Not only is the material presented in an interesting manner, it is all you would need to cover the course. Students will benefit greatly from having a text with all of the important facts in one place. When it is time for review and studying, their chance of success is greatly improved. Instead of trying to find and leaf through all of the handouts that they stuffed into the bottom of their lockers or notebooks, they can go to the text and review the all of the material presented in an appealing and student friendly format.
Sophie O'Brien, Consultant, Toronto District School Board
- The format of the text, and supportive learning skills section are excellent. This introduction section will support student success skills, and provide information for students on how to self monitor and motivate.
Barbara O'Connor, Consultant, Halton Catholic District School Board
- Finally, a comprehensive resource that addresses H&PE expectations and reinforces the positive messages that we advocate for children and youth on a daily basis. The resource will be a great support for teachers. There are ample opportunities for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills related to Ontario Curriculum H&PE expectations for Grades 9 and 10.
Debbie Sprentz, Consultant, Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board
- I have often thought, given the scope of the Gr. 9 and 10 courses and the limited time available to teach all of that material, that a text for Physical & Health Education at the Gr. 9 and 10 levels would be of limited use. I stand corrected.
Ted has outdone himself this time. This is a marvelously comprehensive text, which encompasses all strands of H&PE at the junior level with a clear presentation of the facts, current trends and social issues and sound advice for the students. Each chapter contains a wealth of information whether a teacher is looking to cover the basics or is aiming for more indepth coverage including enrichment opportunities. The layout of each chapter is easily navigable with opportunities for cross-curricular study. I found the chapter review questions provided an excellent summary of the content of each chapter with substantial application of the knowledge gained.
As a teacher, I would find this to be an invaluable tool in my H&PE class and in my quest to encourage my students to become lifelong, healthy, active adults. The text is a little like a "bed in a bag" or "one-stop shopping" (if you get my drift)...everything you need in one nice, neat little package. Kudos to Ted on an exceptionally well-written text.
Martha Wenn, Huron Heights Secondary School
- The book is outstanding. It not only covers all aspects of the Gr. 9 and 10 curriculum, but it "uncovers" and goes deeply into so many areas of the curriculum and provokes critical thinking.
I love that there are sections devoted to sports and athletics that may not be as "traditional", as ultimate frisbee, cricket and so many outdoor sports.
The text not only addresses all aspects of the HPE curriculum, but the fact that there is strong ties to literacy - not only reading, writing and oral communication, but strategies such as: accessing prior knowledge, making predictions, making connections, visualizing.
A concern discussed many times throughout the text on creating safe schools, school climate, and bullying, homophobia and racism, as well as decision making goals.
I very much appreciate the Healthy Sexuality sections and in fact, have shared that with my own children this week, as one of our three girls is in grade
-
Thanks for addressing important provincial HPE issues as fitness testing, BMI ..... SMART goals and FITT principles. I'm so impressed with the text …. You have done a wonderful job I just wish now that each of our arts areas had such a comprehensive text that could be used in Grades 9 and 10.
Mary Ann Fratia, Peel District School Board
- This is an attractive text that would be useful in the high school to support the grade 9 and 10 program.
Mary Cunningham, Consultant, Kenora Catholic District School Board
- The chapter review questions not only deal with the knowledge and understanding but also allow students to work within the thinking/inquiry, application, and communication categories of the achievement chart.
Lisa Verge, Consultant, Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario
- Congratulations on the Healthy Active Living: Keep Fit, Stay Healthy, Have Fun text book. I am very impressed by the content and the format. It looks great and reads really easily too. I am pleased to see gambling included as it gambling among youth continues to be a concern. As well, the prevention of FASD is a passion of mine so was very happy to see it covered as well...especially with its connection to binge drinking.
There is more and more research connecting alcohol and cancer and you have covered that in the chart on page 237 - The Long-Term Health Effects of Alcohol: Leaving No Body Part Unharmed. Finally, thanks so much for mention in the acknowledgments. That was a very nice surprise. Again, congratulations to you and your team for the outstanding job on developing this resource.

Teacher Reviews
- Material is presented in a bias-free way...in fact, I was impressed that it mentioned previous biases and how we need to be aware of them.
Sheila Allen, Havergal College
- I believe it meets the criteria set down by the government for grades 9 and 10 and even exceeds them. The progression is logical and the content quite completea trademark of Ted's work.
Bruce Briard, L'Amoureaux Collegiate Institute
- I am THRILLED with the text! Congratulations! This is a fantastic resource and an incredible accomplishment!
Sarah Bruce, Havergal College
- I believe this is the only Grade 9/10 text we'd ever need! Here's why:
- It is written at an appropriate reading level and follows a logical sequence.
- It is not too long and dragged out in its description of any topic.
- It is written TO the student they can relate to it.
- It covers all topics required by the Grade 9 curriculum and Grade 10.
- Although website information is dynamic and always changing, the WWWeblinks gives the students a quick reference point from which to begin their research.
- In chapters 4 and 5, the descriptions of the fitness appraisals are all a rookie teacher or experienced teacher would ever need. Very easy for students to understand and calculate.
- The thought and discussion provoking questions at the end of each chapter are great springboards to further classroom discussion.
Carolyn Cameron, Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School
- Placing a "Table of Contents" with each Unit is an excellent idea and gives the students the opportunity to realize the breadth of material presented in each Unit.
Catherine Casey, Sir William Mulock Secondary School
- I went through the Health Active Living text written by Ted Temertzoglou. I really liked the layout of the chapters and sections. The summary, key terms, content and useful questions make the text user-friendly and comprehensive. The content meets curriculum requirements very well and information and references are current. I look forward to using this resource!
Jane Clark, Gananoque Secondary School
- Great body image chapter! Much needed especially for grade 10 -- Missing in Glencoe health which we currently use.
Jen Crites, Brantford Collegiate Institute and Vocational School
- I have just finished reviewing the whole textbook and I think Thompson Publishing and Ted have done an excellent job.
Andrew Fair, Don Mills Collegiate Institute
- I read the entire textbook and was most impressed with the writer's ability to cover all the course expectations in a concise and clear manner. The presentation was logical, thorough and the vocabulary was appropriate for the grade 9 and 10 student. Several terms, terminology and topics will be foreign to most grade 9 and 10 students but vital and useful to those remaining in H & PE, so introducing students to these terms in grade 9 and 10 is an excellent idea and should make teaching and learning in the senior grades easier for teachers and students.
Sofia Fox, Westmount Secondary School
- I have reviewed and am very excited about the Healthy Active Living text. Everything is there that should be there; it will be nice to have everything in one place and not have to go searching for information. I especially liked the fitness evaluation sections with the charts.
Karen Gannon, Atikokan High School
- The new textbook from TEP for grades 9 and 10 Health Active Living Education follows the curriculum exactly. The emphasis on health strategies is impressive, but what sets this text apart from any other is the attention to all 4 strands. In particular, the Active Living and Physical Activity strands have been built out to give teachers what they want and need diversified support. What more could a teacher want? When followed from page 1 to 487, it ensures that all curriculum expectations are met, therefore it can help to provide a standard for which all H&PE teachers can strive for.
Derek Graham, Westdale Secondary School
- The inclusion of a "Career Focus" (p. 70) and the "WWWeblinks" is a terrific tool for both students and teachers. Both will provide dialogue and information for use in many aspects of the course.
Dave Inglis, H.B. Beal Secondary School
- This material provides a greater preparation for students to confidently and enthusiastically select the Exercise Science course in their senior years. Ultimately, this will change the delivery of the Exercise Science program, as students will have knowledge that can be revisited rather than taught for the first time. This will provide more opportunity, and time to reach deeper into the rich curriculum of the Exercise Science program.
Ellen Irving, Iroquois Ridge High School
- I do not think there is any content that might make it difficult to use this resource in a teaching context - I think you have approached necessary issue-related topics such as homophobia with sensitivity.
Andrew Macallum, Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute
- First of all, I would like to congratulate you, Ted and the team for putting together what should be another excellent textbook that I will look forward to using in class. I am really impressed by the extent of the research, the quality of the writing and the attractive layout of the book.
Daniel McFadden, Earl Haig Secondary School
- We found it to be very informative and long over due. It will be a very valuable resource for our curriculum and students. This textbook will dignify our profession. It is Canadian!!!
John Morelli, Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy High School
- I believe that the most commendable aspect of this text is that the author acknowledges that the student/reader is the one who must make his/her own choices regarding fitness, drug use, nutrition, sexuality etc. The text seeks not to impose "correct" choices but rather to provide information and resources which allow the students to make intelligent, educated, healthy choices for themselves. This is a welcome change from the "preachy" approach seen in other texts which has been shown to be ineffective.
Doug Osborne, Parry Sound High School
- Wow! This textbook is going to be a FABULOUS reference for our students. I don't know what we've done without it! This book provides a really excellent foundation for all PPL courses, but it's also the only true introduction for the Exercise Science course! After teaching PSE4U a couple of times, I can already see how this text will make my job easier. Bravo!
Kari Platman, Havergal College
- I was so interested in reading it, I read it cover to cover. Really! It reads easily and very applicable. The way it reads is very easy to understand for the level of students whether I use it with my juniors or use it as a resource with my seniors.
Kim Potter, Streetsville Secondary School
- I have taught Health and Physical Education for 25 years, grades 6 through 12 (and old OAC), and have never had the opportunity to use such a complete resource. This is the complete text book in that it includes fitness, the standard subjects of our Health curriculum , the activities and sports we emphasize and the ACT- CPR resource.
Dale Roberts, Elmira District Secondary School
- I was delighted to see how you have included Literacy in the introduction. This is a term which seems often lost in the world of PHE. By including a brief overview in the text it gives the teachers a better understanding of what is expected of them with regard to our discipline. In that introduction you put into words (written words) thoughts that we as PHE teachers express daily. Things like "Choose to Participate" and the reasons "Why We Take PHE" add credibility to what we teach.
Paul Solarski, Brebeuf High School
- The pictures of the muscles with simple exercises is excellent. This is possibly the best reference I have seen in a long time. This is very well suited to the high school level.
