The SAH was designed to be used in conjunction with the textbook. Worksheets match up exactly with the sections of the textbook, and meet the curriculum expectation requirements for both Grade 9 and 10 in Ontario. Students can easily refer back to the textbook using the quick reference indicators throughout the handbook. For teachers, it's an easy way to evaluate and assess students. Everything is built-in, including culminating activities.
The Student Activity Handbook is a personal guide to success in H&PE. Full of fun exercises that reinforce the key learning outcomes of the curriculum, students who use the SAH are much more engaged in their health and physical education. The SAH is infused with features that allow both teachers and students to assess and evaluate progress - a critical element for success. There's even room for parents to get involved.
The Daily Activity Journal encourages students to reflect on their success and challenges. It’s a 21st century approach that empowers students to take ownership of their physical education. This is especially important in this subject which helps students develop healthy habits that will serve them for life.
The SAH supports metacognition. Students explore goal setting and become aware of how they learn best. These are skills that serve students in all areas of life, not just H&PE. They track what units they cover throughout the month and rate their own participation, safety and social skills. They can also track their heart rate and total steps with the help of a pedometer. HAL motivates students by placing the emphasis on goal setting and personal achievement as per grade 9 and 10 curriculum expectations.
A Personal Fitness Profile (PFP) is built into Healthy Active Learning as a way to assess students for, as and of learning. Throughout the course, students complete the PFP activities in their Handbooks, for which they are assessed but not evaluated. Students have the whole course to become well versed in the PFP material which then informs the Student Led Interviews, worth 30% of their mark. PFP exercises are in one place, so students have them all and parents know what will make up the culminating.
