Doug Gleddie (Active Start: Fundamental Movements)

Dr. Doug Gleddie is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Education at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta. Doug’s experience includes teaching Kindergarten to Grade 12 Physical Education and serving as director of the Ever Active Schools program (Alberta). He has delivered hundreds of workshops and presentations on quality Physical Education, developed curriculum, taught Physical Education pedagogy at the master’s and undergraduate levels, and published several articles in the field. Doug has received the R. Tait Mackenzie Address/ Canada Scholar Award (PHE Canada), the Robert Routledge Award and Certificate of Commendation (HPEC), and the Healthy School Community Award (Government of Alberta).

Michelle Kilborn (Active Start: Fundamental Movements)

Michelle Kilborn is a PhD student and sessional instructor in Physical Education at the University of Alberta, Department of Secondary Education. Her research is focused on the role of Health and Physical Education curriculum in a health promoting schools approach. She recently completed a secondment at Alberta Education where she contributed to the development of the Framework for Kindergarten to Grade 12 Wellness Education. Prior to moving to Alberta, Michelle taught for fifteen years in British Columbia and was president of the provincial specialists’ association, PE-BC, and a local association, Greater Victoria Physical Educators.

Mel Trojanovic (Perfect Practice: Learn to Play)

Milena (Mel) Trojanovic has been an elementary school teacher with the Halton District School Board for twenty years, specializing in health and physical education. She is a regular workshop presenter for board initiatives, as well as for CIRA (Canadian Intramural Recreation Association) Ontario projects. Mel has been actively involved in writing and reviewing curriculum and daily physical activity resources for Ophea and the Ministry of Education. She has received the Halton District School Board Award of Distinction and the Ontario Association for the Supervision of Physical and Health Education Teacher Advocacy Award for her tireless efforts in promoting health and well-being to staff and students both locally and provincially.

Kirstin Schwass has been actively involved in health and physical education, coaching, and community health for over thirty years. She has a bachelor of physical education and a master’s in psychology of sport. She has taught elementary physical education at Morton Way Public School in the Peel District School Board for thirteen years, where she is the coordinator of the walk-to-school program, which received the International Walk to School Award. Carolyn Temertzoglou (Game On: Ready to Play)

Carolyn Temertzoglou teaches Health and Physical Education in the pre-service teacher education program at the Ontario Institute For Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (OISEUT). Carolyn has written and reviewed curriculum and curriculum supports for the Ministry of Education and serves on several provincial committees that advocate for quality daily Health and Physical Education programs. She is co-author of the Exercise Science Workbook/Lab Manual (Thompson Educational Publishing, 2003). Carolyn received the Ontario Supervision of Physical and Health Education Teacher Advocacy Award for her work in supporting pre-service and in-service Health and Physical Education teachers with their practice.

Shannon Patterson (Game On: Ready to Play)

Shannon Patterson is a Health and Physical Education specialist at the intermediate level, and has been teaching in the Toronto District School Board for five years. She is a Key Physical Education Teacher for the Toronto District School Board, and has had many opportunities to mentor other teachers and lead PHE Live sessions. Shannon has been involved with the Toronto Schools on the Move Program for the past four years, successfully implementing healthy initiatives within her school and community. Shannon was a member of the York University varsity basketball and track teams and is a certified personal trainer.

Jenny Kierstead (Yoga I: Begin to Explore)

Jenny Kierstead is founder of the award-winning Breathing Space Yoga Studio. She has become a visionary in the yoga movement throughout Eastern Canada, and received the prestigious Woman of Excellence Award in entrepreneurship and innovation in 2009. In addition to building a thriving franchise system of yoga studios, Jenny has been instrumental in implementing yoga in public schools, as she contributed to the development of the new Yoga 11 curriculum being taught throughout Atlantic Canada.
